Taxonomy is a collection of thirty small works that add up to one large work. Each individual canvas is a piece of art in its own right. Yet, only in putting the whole family together can the full work be appreciated.
Maria Rothko is best known for two things: his color field paintings, and their immersive sense of scale. Rothko reccomended that viewersstadn as close as they could to his very large canvases so that they might experience their sense of intimacy and feel "enveloped within" the painting.
